The story behind our dogs...

Dogs descended from Field Trial Breeding

It is unfortunate that the gap between pure working bred Goldens and those bred for the Show ring was ever widening (as it had done from the war days) and to excel in both the spheres of Conformation ( Shows) and Gundog work ( Field Trials), with the same dog, was exceedingly difficult.  At the top level of both spheres where Champions were made- up, the dream of having a Dual Champion dog was fast receding. I wrote an article about this very subject that was published in Dog World in 2007

IN 1978 WE INTRODUCED FIELD TRIAL BREEDING INTO OUR KENNEL LINES

Having made up Champions in the show ring that also had the ability to work, it was apparent that we needed more style and flair in order to excel at the top level on the working side as well. With our growing interest in the Trialling of our dogs, David and I decided to introduce a bitch of pure bred working lines into our family.

In 1978 we bought a bitch puppy from Lucille Sawtell – Sheersilk of Yeo from Catcombe – FT Ch Holway Chanter x Shotsilk of Yeo.
She was bred exclusively from generations of dogs which have shown exceptional ability in the shooting field – her pedigree included many Field Trial Champions and Field Trial Winners.
She was our first working bred Golden and was fast, stylish and so biddable.  She won over 11 Open Working and Cold Game Tests and a Novice Field Trial. We had two litters from Silk and kept Caper and Calamity from the first and Cataclysmic (Klizzy) and Chaos from the second.

During this period, Rumba came to Catcombe.
He was a very special dog indeed. Our present day working dogs are his children and grandchildren, and are all descended from him.

These two photographs of father and his three sons span a decade and more.

Chancey their sister, together with Cherokee produced our next generation.

They were both mated to F.T. Ch. Ashsham Counsel .

At that stage they had won 6 firsts, 18 seconds, 5 thirds 4 Certificate of Merits in Field Trials and many awards in working tests.

Today, being older, they have all been retired from active competition but during their careers Crysler went on to win a 12 dog Open Stake, and awards in 24 dog stakes. Cellist won an 12 dog Open Stake and Cymbal won a second in the Northern Golden Retriever Association two day Stake and then had to be retired  from active competition through injury.

Carli won an Open 12 dog Stake and then sadly died of Lymphosarcoma within 6 months. He was only 4 years old. His loss was devastating.

He is pictured on the left.

Chenouk won the Golden Retriever Club two day Open stake in 2002 and ran in the Retriever Championship that year. She also won the Golden Retriever Year Book Page for the dog winning most points in Field Trials in 1998.  She is pictured on the left.  Both Carli and Chenouk were owned and handled by Danny Burgess.
